Ladder x Apple Watch Getting Started & Troubleshooting

Use this guide if you're setting up Ladder and Apple Watch for the first time or troubleshooting a syncing issue.

Apple Watch does not sync with Ladder Web. Pairing a watch directly with a web browser isn't technically possible. This may change in the future, but it isn't supported today.

If your watch is stuck in a "Ready" state after working before, this fixes most issues:

  1. On your phone, open the Watch app.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and check whether the Ladder app on your watch is fully installed or still spinning (loading).
  3. If it's spinning, it's trying to update and needs to fully finish before it will work. Try:
    • Pressing stop and restarting
    • Restarting your watch
    • Opening the App Store on your watch to update (unless you're on a beta version)

How do you know if Ladder and Apple Watch are syncing correctly?

To test whether your phone app and watch are synced, start a workout with your watch nearby. Confirm via Bluetooth that the watch is connected. When you start a workout, the watch should automatically open Ladder, and your current movement and stats (calories and BPM) should display in real time.

Setting up Ladder to sync with Apple Watch

  1. Install the app on your watch (ideally with iOS and watchOS up to date):
    1. On your phone, search "Watch."
    2. Scroll down to Ladder and open its details.
    3. Make sure the "Show App on Apple Watch" toggle is ON.
  2. Turn on Apple Health data from your phone:
    1. This is prompted the first time you start a workout. If you didn't turn on all permissions then, check the next step.
    2. To confirm it's on: go to Settings → search "Health" → Data Access & Devices → Ladder → toggle ON all read/write access.
  3. Turn on Apple Health data from your watch:
    1. On your watch, go to Settings.
    2. Go to Health.
    3. Scroll down and tap Apps.
    4. Scroll to Ladder (if there are two Ladder apps listed, repeat these steps for both).
    5. Tap into Ladder and turn on all toggles to allow syncing.

Before starting a workout, keep your phone close to your watch. For best results, open Ladder on your watch before you start.

Troubleshooting Ladder with Apple Watch

  • Check Bluetooth and your phone's connection to your watch: Open Control Center on your iPhone and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both on. Your Apple Watch uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to communicate with your paired iPhone.
  • Restart your phone: Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears. Drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo to turn it back on.
  • Restart your watch: Press and hold both the side button and the Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds, then release when you see the Apple logo.
  • Update watchOS: Make sure your watch is connected to Wi-Fi, open the Settings app on your watch, tap General > Software Update, and tap Install if an update is available.
  • Update iOS: Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Tap Automatic Updates, turn on Download iOS Updates, then turn on Install iOS Updates so your device updates automatically.
  • Delete and reinstall the watch app: Press the Digital Crown to see all your apps, touch and hold the display until View Options appears, tap Edit Apps, tap the delete button on the app, then tap Delete App to confirm. Press the Digital Crown to finish.
  • Delete and reinstall the phone app: Touch and hold the app on your Home Screen, tap Remove App, then choose Keep in App Library or Delete App.
